To make this small outdoor mattress, you’ll need the following items:

  • 4 standard pillow cases. I used ones that I had at home.** As they were all white, I added a personal touch by painting gold stars on them.
  • 4 standard pillows. Time to give your yellowed pillows languishing in the linen closet a second life!
  • An iron
  • A sewing machine or thread and needle

If you would like to decorate your mattress with shooting stars:

  • Fabric paint
  • Brush
  • A star-themed cardboard pattern
First iron your pillow cases. It makes working with them easier, especially if you personalize them with a design. Plus, the final result will look much nicer.
Before assembling the pillow cases, paint your design on them using a pattern* or by freehand and then let dry. Make sure that you place a piece of cardboard between the two sides of the case to prevent the paint from transferring to the bottom side.
Pin the cases together lengthwise and then sew them together.
Insert the pillows in the cases.
Sew up the openings of the cases. Pinning beforehand will make this last step easier.
And there you go! You now have an attractive, comfy mattress for a night of stargazing.
