DIY Halloween lanterns

October 2016

Here’s a terrific idea for Halloween: two fun DIY projects using recycled containers that you can do with the kids!

Whether displayed at the front door or in the window, or used as eye-catching lanterns that your kids can take along for trick-or-treating, your creativity will shine!

Required materials

  • Glass containers
  • White pencil
  • Eraser
  • Black construction paper
  • Tracing paper
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Fine black permanent marker
  • Fake LED tea lights

Remove all labels from your glass containers and clean well. Using a white pencil, draw the different parts of your Halloween-themed figures on black construction paper.

Carefully cut out all the shapes using scissors.

Glue the pieces of your figures onto the glass containers using a hot glue gun. You can also add details to your figures by drawing them directly on the glass using a permanent marker.

Cut out wide strips of tracing paper that are the same height as your containers. Placed around the inside, they will act as a filter to diffuse the light uniformly. (Of course, you will use fake LED lights, and not real candles!)

  • Using the dishwasher is a convenient way to clean the glass containers.
  • White pencil can easily be removed using an eraser if your lines are not quite perfect.
  • If you make a mistake when adding details to your figures on the glass with the permanent marker, simply use paper towel soaked with a little rubbing alcohol to erase the imperfections. Allow to dry and then redraw.
  • By lining your container with construction or tracing paper, you’ll create an attractive, soft glow. Of course, this means that you cannot place a real candle inside!
